A palladium-catalyzed oxidative cascade reaction of alpha-tosylamide allenes has been developed. The reactivity of the allenes is controlled by the tosylamide group. In the presence of terminal alkynes the reaction proceeds via a pathway leading to a one-pot construction of pyrrole rings. Moreover, a solvent-controlled chemoselectivity of the cascade reaction was realized, leading to a stereospecific and divergent synthesis of (Z)-tetrasubstituted olefins, 2,5-dihydropyrroles, and pyrroles. Enantioenriched (Z)-tetrasubstituted olefins and 2,5-dihydropyrroles are readily synthesized by chirality transfer using this approach.

Efficient hydrogenation of electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes access to saturate ketone with CH3OH as a single hydrogen donor under electrochemical conditions has been successfully developed. This hydrogenation strategy can be used to convert electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes to saturate ketone under electrochemical conditions with exogenous-reductant and a metal catalyst. Mechanistic studies reveal that radical hydrogenation was involved in this transformation. Notably, various electron-deficient internal olefins and alkynes could be tolerated in such an electrochemical hydrogenation synthetic strategy and can be easily scaled up with good efficiency.

Strawberry is one of the most popular fruits because of its sensorial and functional properties. However, strawberry crop is sensitive to salt stress conditions. Despite plants have plasticity, high salt concentrations induce molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses in plants. There is evidence that the abscisic acid (ABA) hormone acts as a signaling molecule under stress conditions; however, the molecular mechanisms involved in the synthesis and homeostasis of ABA and in the induction of phytochemical antioxidant compounds under stress conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effect of stress induced by NaCl (salt stress – SS), with or without the simultaneous application of ABA, on the ABA, phenylpropanoids and L-ascorbic acid (AsA) metabolisms were evaluated. The physiological aspects (Na, Cl and proline concentration, photosynthetic variables) were also studied. The results showed that salt stress increases the Na and Cl content in the leaves, affects photosynthetic variables and triggers the production of proline, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside, total phenolic compounds and AsA content, alongside the upregulation of several genes from the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways. These effects were accompanied by the induction of compounds and transcripts related to ABA biosynthesis, conjugation and catabolism. Otherwise, the exogenous application of ABA in salt stressed plants promotes a shift in gene expression and metabolism to mitigate the stress. Therefore, salt stress affects the metabolism of ABA, phenylpropanoids and AsA in strawberry increasing phytochemical composition which is strongly associated with an ABA-dependent mechanism.

A series of seven bis(pyridinedipyrrolide)zirconium complexes, Zr((PDPR2)-P-R1)(2), where [(PDPR2)-P-R1](2-) is the doubly deprotonated form of [2,6-bis(5-R-1-3-R-2-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine], were prepared and characterized in solution by NMR, UV/vis absorption, and emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. All complexes exhibit remarkably long emission lifetimes (tau = 190-576 mu s) with high quantum efficiencies (Phi(PL) = 0.10-0.38) upon excitation with visible light in a benzene solution. The substituents on the pyrrolide rings were shown to have significant effects on the photoluminescence and electrochemical properties of these compounds. The R-2 substituents (R-2 = H, Me, Ph, or C6F5) show only limited effects on the absorption and emission profiles of the complexes but allow systematic tuning of the ground- and excited-state redox potentials over a range of almost 600 mV. The R-1 substituents (R-1 = H, Me, Ph, or 2,4,6-Me3Ph) influence both the optical and electrochemical properties through electronic effects. Additionally, the R-1 substituents have profound consequences for the structural flexibility and overall stability of the compounds. Distortions of the Zr(PDP)(2) core from idealized D-2d symmetry in the solid state can be traced to the steric profiles of the R-1 substituents and correlate with the observed Stokes shifts for each compound. The complex with the smallest ligand system, Zr((PDPH)-P-H)(2), coordinates two additional solvent molecules in a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution, which allowed the isolation of photoluminescent, eight-coordinate Zr((PDPH)-P-H)(2) (THF)(2). The photoredox catalytic dehalogenation of aryl iodides and aryl chlorides using the most reducing derivative, Zr((PDPMe)-P-Me)(2), highlights the potential of Zr(PDP)(2) photosensitizers to promote challenging reductive transformations under mild conditions upon excitation with green light.

A facile and general synthesis of 2,4,6-triaryl pyrimidines has been developed. It involves a one-pot [2+1+1+1+1] pseudo five-component annulation of one methyl ketone, two aldehydes and two NH4OAc catalyzed by TfOH. One C-C and four C-N bonds are formed during the oxidative annulation process. The reaction shows good tolerance of many important functional groups in air and produces only water as the coproduct, making this methodology a highly versatile alternative to the existing methods for structuring pyrimidine framework.

Herein, the universal design of high-efficiency stimuli-responsive luminous materials endowed with mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) functions is reported. The origin of the unique stimuli-triggered TADF switching for a series of carbazole-isophthalonitrile-based donor-acceptor (D-A) luminogens is demonstrated based on systematic photophysical and X-ray analysis, coupled with theoretical calculations. It was revealed that a tiny alteration of the intramolecular D-A twisting in the excited-state structures governed by the solid morphologies is responsible for this dynamic TADF switching behavior. This concept is applicable to the fabrication of bicolor emissive organic light-emitting diodes using a single TADF emitter.

Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

C3-(Trans-2-arylethenyl)carbonylated chlorophyll derivatives possessing a bacteriochlorin or chlorin pi-system were synthesized by cross-aldol (Claisen-Schmidt) condensation of methyl pyrobacteriopheophorbide-a or 3-acetyl-3-devinyl-pyropheophorbide-a bearing the C3-acetyl group with p-(un)substituted benzaldehydes under basic conditions. The corresponding porphyrin-type chlorophyll derivatives were prepared by the oxidation (17,18-didehydrogenation) of the chlorin-type. Their Qy absorption and fluorescence emission maxima in dichloromethane correlated well with Hammett substituent constants of the p-substituents. Several electron-withdrawing p-substituents suppressed the emission due to photoinduced electron transfer quenching in a molecule. The substitution sensitivities for their maxima and fluorescence quantum yields decreased in the order of bacteriochlorin-, chlorin- and porphyrin-type derivatives.

A transition metal free expedient approach for the C=C bond cleavage of electron deficient alkenes such as arylidene Meldrum’s acid and malononitrile derivatives are discussed.
