The transfer hydrogenation of ketones catalyzed by transition metal complexes has attracted much attention. A series of ruthenium(11) complexes bearing 2,6-bis(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine ligands (R-BTPs) were synthesized and characterized by NMR analysis and X-ray diffraction. These ruthenium (II) complexes were applied in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones. Their different catalytic activity were attributed to the alkyl arms on the 2,6-bis(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridine. As the length of the alkyl arms rising, the catalytic activities of the complex catalysts decreased. By means of 0.4 mol % catalyst RuCl2(PPh3)(3-methylbutyl-BTP) in refluxing 2-propanol, a variety of ketones were reduced to their corresponding alcohols with >95% conversion over a period of 3 h. Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are important bio-medical structures, playing a major role in the interaction with human immune systems. Their core regions, containing multiple units ofl-glycero-d-mannoheptoses (l,d-heptose), are highly conserved structurally (withO3 andO7 glycosidic bonds), making them an epitope of high interest for the potential development of new antibiotics and vaccines. Research in this field has always been restricted by the limited availability of the parentl,d-heptose as well as its biochemical epimeric precursord-glycero-d-mannoheptose (d,d-heptose). This problem of availability has recently been solved by us, through a rapid and efficient practical synthesis ofl,d-manno-heptose peracetate demonstrated at scale. Herein we report an optimized, technically simple and versatile synthetic strategy for the differentiation of both thel-glyceroandd-glycero-d-mannoheptose scaffolds. Our approach is based on an orthoester methodology for the differentiation of all three positions of the sugar core using aO6,O7-tetraisopropyl disiloxyl (TIPDS) protecting group for the exocyclic positions. Furthermore, the regioselective opening toward 7-OH acceptors (6O-FTIPDS ethers) differentiates the exocyclic diol which has been demonstrated with a broader set of substrates and for bothmanno-heptoses for the first time.

The heterogeneous heteropolyacid-catalyzed acetalization of glycerol with acetone was investigated under solvent-free conditions. In this work, the calcined Ta/W mixed addenda heteropolyacid catalyst ({H-20}-355) was employed as a solid acid catalyst and showed much higher activity than these soluble Keggin-type catalysts in the acetalization of glycerol with acetone due to its superacidity (H-0 =-12.95). Meanwhile, it showed high stability in catalytic recycles and extended for acetalization of glycerol with the other aldehydes and ketones. Based on the catalyst characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), P-31 NMR spectra, FT-IR spectra, pyridine-absorbed FT-IR, and Hammett acidity functions (H-0) by UV-vis spectroscopy, it was found that the acidic strength of the Ta/W mixed addenda heteropolyacid was highly dependent on the contents of crystalline water that could be tuned by calcination temperature. Notably, the solid superacid catalyst {H-20}355 was swollen by acetone, exhibiting an interesting pseudo-liquid behavior, which served as a microreactor and facilitated the reaction. Furthermore, after the acetalization reaction of glycerol with furfural (98% yield of acetal) on {H-20}-355 catalyst, the furan ring of the acetal products can be hydrogenated sequentially into dioxolane or dioxane with Pd/C catalyst under room temperature condition without the need of any isolation procedure.

Phosphorus (P) is one the least available essential plant macronutrients in soils that is a major constraint on plant growth. Soybean (Glycine max L.) production is often limited due to low P availability. The better management of P deficiency requires improvement of soybean’s P use efficiency. Sugars are implicated in P starvation responses, and a complete understanding of the role of sucrose together with P in coordinating P starvation responses is missing in soybean. This study explored global metabolomic changes in previously screened low-P-tolerant (Liaodou, L13) and low-P-sensitive (Tiefeng 3, T3) soybean genotypes by liquid chromatography coupled mass spectrometry. We also studied the root morphological response to sucrose application (1%) in P-starved soybean genotypes against normal P supply. Root morphology in L13 genotype has significantly improved P starvation responses as compared to the T3 genotype. Exogenous sucrose application greatly affected root length, root volume, and root surface area in L13 genotype while low-P-sensitive genotype, i.e., T3, only responded by increasing number of lateral roots. Root : shoot ratio increased after sucrose treatment regardless of P conditions, in both genotypes. T3 showed a relatively higher number of differentially accumulated metabolites between P-starved and normal P conditions as compared to L13 genotype. Common metabolites accumulated under the influence of sucrose were 5-O-methylembelin, D-glucuronic acid, and N-acetyl-L-phenylalanine. We have discussed the possible roles of the pathways associated with these metabolites. The differentially accumulated metabolites between both genotypes under the influence of sucrose are also discussed. These results are important to further explore the role of sucrose in the observed pathways. Especially, our results are relevant to formulate strategies for improving P efficiency of soybean genotypes with different P efficiencies.

We report a catalytic, light-driven method for the intramolecular hydroetherification of unactivated alkenols to furnish cyclic ether products. These reactions occur under visible-light irradiation in the presence of an Ir-III-based photoredox catalyst, a Bronsted base catalyst, and a hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) co-catalyst. Reactive alkoxy radicals are proposed as key intermediates, generated by direct homolytic activation of alcohol O-H bonds through a proton-coupled electron-transfer mechanism. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope and high functional-group tolerance, and it accommodates a diverse range of alkene substitution patterns. Results demonstrating the extension of this catalytic system to carboetherification reactions are also presented.

A visible-light photoredox-catalyzed formal [5 + 1] cycloaddition of N-tosyl vinylaziridines with difluoroalkyl halides as unique C1 synthons was developed. The procedure provides an efficient and practical method to synthesize diverse pyridines in moderate to good yields. A palladium-catalyzed oxidative cascade reaction of alpha-tosylamide allenes has been developed. The reactivity of the allenes is controlled by the tosylamide group. In the presence of terminal alkynes the reaction proceeds via a pathway leading to a one-pot construction of pyrrole rings. Moreover, a solvent-controlled chemoselectivity of the cascade reaction was realized, leading to a stereospecific and divergent synthesis of (Z)-tetrasubstituted olefins, 2,5-dihydropyrroles, and pyrroles. Enantioenriched (Z)-tetrasubstituted olefins and 2,5-dihydropyrroles are readily synthesized by chirality transfer using this approach.

Chalcones, as a large group of organic compounds, are widely implemented in various types of anticancer therapeutics. These plant metabolites are present in fruits, vegetables, spices, and have anti-tumor, anti-inflammation, immunomodulation, antibacterial and anti-oxidative activities, as well as many other pharmacological and biological effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate cytotoxic effects, type of cell death and mechanism of action of the newly synthesized vanillin based chalcone analogs, (CH1) and (CH2) on human colon cancer HCT-116 and noncancerous (control) MRC-5 cell lines. In order to compare the effects of vanillin based chalcone analogs on investigated cell lines, as reference substances cisplatin (cisPt) and dehydrozingerone (DHZ) were used. Investigation of antitumor effect of chalcone analogs on HCT-116 cells was carried out by three methods MTT assay, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analysis. The result of our investigation indicated that newly synthesized vanillin based chalcone analogs expressed powerful antitumor effect on cancer cells (HCT-116 cell line), while their effect on healthy cells (MRC-5 cell line) was not statistically significant. Vanillin based chalcone analogs caused overexpression and activation of mitochondrial Bax protein and caspase-3 in HCT-116 cells, indicating that their mechanism of antitumor action was mediated through activation of the inner apoptotic pathway. These results indicate possible usefulness of CH1 and CH2 in antitumor therapy whether through its direct cytotoxic effect or as adjuvant therapy. Our results indicate possible usefulness of CH1 and CH2 vanillin based chalcone analogs in antitumor therapy.
